A new home for a growing congregation in Woking town centre
Welcome Church had served Woking for 140 years when, in January 2020, it opened a new £5m purpose-built auditorium on Church Street West, in the heart of the town centre. Designed by Plan A and built by O&D Construction, the low-rise chapel sits respectfully beside the church’s existing building, its back-lit coloured glazing a beacon on the street. More than 1,200 guests came through the doors on the opening Sunday, and the congregation grew from around 550 to over 700 within weeks.
Inside, Ø1200 PLUTO SUSPENDED discs float beneath the pitched ceiling of the main hall: 15mm thin panels on fine wires that light the seating evenly and without glare, while leaving the roof space clear for the stage rig, speakers and colour-washed rooflights. A big room, lit with a light touch.
